The kingdom of Belgium is in northwest Europe, and shares borders with France, Germany, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. Belgium covers an area of 30528 sq km with a population of around 10.7 million. Belgiums two largest regions are the Dutch speaking region of Flanders in the north, the French speaking region of Wallonia in the south and the Brussels Capital region, mainly a French-speaking enclave within the Flemish Region.
Belgium has three main geographical regions: the coastal plain in the north west consisting mainly of sand dunes and polders (low lying land enclosed by a dyke), the thickly forested hills of the Ardennes uplands, and the central plateau. The climate is maritime temperate with considerable rainfall.
